Between 2010 and 2015, the Conservative Party were the most prominent primary frame sponsors (figure 6.5), followed by newspaper editorials. The latter appeared as primary frame sponsors more often than the Labour Party, who were the official opposition. This is a notable shift away from the party politics dimension and suggests a marginalisation of the Labour Party’s perspective throughout a period dominated by economic crisis and austerity economics.

As with the other primary frame sponsors presented in this chapter, the period between 2010 and 2014 saw the news media most often write articles about poverty primarily discussing the views of Conservative Party members. While this was a period of coalition government, the Liberal Democrats did not feature as part of the analysis. The picture that emerges from this quantitative analysis of primary frame sponsors indicates an overall reduction in the number of different sources that the press consult. Coupled with the rise in newspaper editorials on poverty, this suggests a shift in the way that newspapers operate, which might make them less likely to challenge elite claims purely in terms of practical resources. As an indicative example, the following section outlines a case study where the interests of the government and the conservative press were closely aligned.
